Outbreak: The Hunger

In Outbreak: The Hunger, author Scott Shoyer, of the Anything Horror website, has written a zombie story that is fresh and fascinating. Shying away from most of the typical plot details that zombie stories live by, Outbreak has more in common with chase films and beastly freak films than a George Romero opus.
Several stories interconnect as we follow a group of animal rights activists releasing infected animals, two people from an animal rescue shelter, and a father and daughter out for a quick day at the Austin Zoo. Once the animals are released by the first group, a chain reaction of violence and survival is set into play.

The first group we encounter is frustratingly similar to the film 28 Days Later, so much so that the author even makes mention of it via the narration of one of the characters. I’ll be honest, the first quarter of this book is a bit of a chore to get through. The pacing is a little off and some of the dialogue and narration are repetitive. The characters make some very stupid decisions and the story is an awkward and jumbled mess right out the gate. The weirdness of zombie hamsters is tough to get behind. When I first read it I laughed out loud. The story is taken very seriously, never played for laughs, so you have to find the right rhythm in order to get behind this oddball decision.

Once the book is about a third of the way through, the repetition in narrative and exposition from the characters comes to an end and Shoyer’s story really begins to take off. Up to this moment, all of the dread that has been building gets knocked away and never maintains its course. Luckily, once the animals start attacking in the zoo and the epic train attack happens, things pick up. The violence and emotion are taken to new heights. At this point in the novel, I couldn’t put it down.

The cover to this book is very misleading, there are virtually no zombies in this story. I believe the author is saving that for the sequel. What we do have is a great example of how a zombie apocalypse starts while avoiding the same old troupes of zombie fiction. Yes, there is a virus, of sorts, but it is much different. The explanation is only teased. Shoyer gives us plenty of information but there is clearly something far more sinister and intriguing than a standard rabies/rage/virus. The mystery element and narrative told through the eyes of the military groups are some of the most interesting ideas in this novel.

Society is being flooded with zombie novels, games, movies, etc., sometimes it is hard to find the gems in all of the junk. Shoyer’s novel is a fun, fast paced (once you get past the first quarter of the book) read that sets up quite nicely for a sequel. The premise of having zoo animals as the zombies is a fresh take on a tired subgenre of horror. It is pretty rare that I enjoy zombie stories due to the flooding of the market but this book, as well its upcoming sequel, support enough great ideas, violence and emotional heft to give it new life.

Shock and awe

I absolutely loved this book. As a horror fan I'm always looking for stories that are not just scary but also filled with great action. I want in-your-face horror and over-the-top action that delivers non-stop fear and excitement. That's exactly what this book does. It takes off right away and never lets up until the very end when the final shock is an unbelievable sucker punch to the gut. It's a zombie novel with a great new twist and amazing scenes. You'll never visit a zoo or ride a train again the same way. But the real secret of the book is the way the writer gets you to care about the characters, especially John and his daughter Fi, which makes the story even more powerful and intense. This book is an absolute must read for any horror-action fan.

Scott Shoyer has served up a very tasty morsel on his first time out as an author. When the story began, I wasn't sure where it was headed. And by the end of the story, it was clear that the reader is kept on the suspense edge until the very last scene. Wow, what a great first novel...well told...fast-paced...crying out for a sequel. Bravo, zombies. Bon appetit.

Great Read- Eileen Heckart Legendary Actress

Luke Yankee is a gifted story teller and very handsome. His mom Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe, and Tony winner Eileen Heckart was one of the great actresses working from the 1940's until 2001 who had success in all mediums. This story of mother and sons, husband and wife, brothers, family, celebrity, is a fabulous read. It's part biography, part history, part life lessons, and full of insight into the world of real working actors. There was a time when actors loved acting and there craft not computerized acting and signing like we are now subjected with on a daily basis. I can't believe this book hasn't been turned into an Olive Kitteridge style mini series by HBO with Sarah Paulson playing legendary actress Eileen Heckart.

I can't believe how much I loved this book!! I didn't know Miss Heckart personally but I now feel like I did. Her son has written a beautiful, funny, loving tribute to his mother, one of the first ladies of the American theatre.
Thank you, Luke for telling us so much about her and your relationship. I will never forget the laughter and tears I had while reading it.
Heckie was one of the greats! Everything I ever saw her in was fabulous because she was in it!
Wish I could see you in Diva Dish! I bet you are amazing!
Your Mama would be so proud! God bless you for sharing this with us all.

This was the most insightful, generous, warm, hilarious and at times heartbreaking tome I have ever read. Her son knew and loved his mother. She was a brilliant actress who didn't really act. She told stories. She worked in the business of show for over 50 years. I couldn't put it down. I am lucky to be the same age as the author. I got the references. It runs the gamut from Hollywood to Broadway and in between. Such a remarkable performer and mother he had growing up. This is the contra "Mommie Dearest".

About the Author
Jim Kartalamakis was born in Salonica, Greece. He went to Toronto, Canada, to study electrical engineering, and at 23 bought his first Alfa, which was where it all started. Thirty years later, Jim still fondly remembers the life and times of the ARCC (Alfa Romeo Club of Canada). He returned to Greece in 1979, and ever since has had only one make of car, albeit different models – from a 1750 GT through to an Alfetta GTV, a 75 3.0 to, currently, another 75 3.0 and a 1.8 Turbo. For many years Jim was a technical writer for several car magazines, and the official Alfa Romeo technical manual translator in Greece.

Great Book, Wish it had some company.

I eagerly awaited this book for a few years before it was finished and released. The author has done a lot of well detailed research and development on this engine. He also is a regular on some of the Bulletin boards relating to Alfa Romeo's, as such he is an active resource for any Alfisti who desire to learn more about the Alfa V6 engines. There is scant availability of any proven, documented facts on V6 development so this book really fills a need for anyone desiring help with improving the power output of the V6 Alfa motor.

While I really like this book I would say that in order to fully versed in everything you need to know about these engines you will need the official workshop manual as well, and to do some additional research.

But if you want to increase the output of your Alfa V6 or learn more about it then this book belongs on your shelf. Or better yet your workshop bench.

Guang S. He, Senior Research Scientist, Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics, State University of New York at Buffalo

Guang S. He is a research scientist who has worked largely in the field of nonlinear optics and photonics for more than forty years. From 1969-1986 he was a research scientist at Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 1986 he has pursued his research career in the USA, worked first in the Photonics Research Laboratory (1987-1999) and then at the Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1999-present). His research activities have mostly focused on the new types of stimulated scattering, optical phase-conjugation, multi-photon nonlinear effects and applications.

This book is a companion text to Active Control of Sound by P.A. Nelson and S.J. Elliott, also published by Academic Press. It summarizes the principles underlying active vibration control and its practical applications by combining material from vibrations, mechanics, signal processing, acoustics and control theory.
The emphasis of the book is on the active control of waves in structures, the active isolation of vibrations, the use of distribusted strain actuators and sensors and the active control of structurally radiated sound. The feedforward control of deterministic and random disturbances in these systems, in addition to the more conventional work on modal feedback control, are covered in detail. The principles of the transducers used as actuators and sensors for such control strategies are also given an in-depth description.

Two chapters are presented on the important topic of the active control of sound radiation from structures: active structural acoustic control. The reason for controlling vibration is often to prevent sound radiation, and the principles and practical application of such techniques are presented here for both plates and cylinders.
