About the Author

Rob Flickenger has been a professional systems administrator for more than 10 years, and all around hacker for as long as he can remember. Rob enjoys spreading the good word of open networks, open standards, and ubiquitous wireless networking. His current professional project is Metrix Communication LLC, which provides wireless hardware and software that embodies the same open source principles he rants about in his books. Rob also works with the U.N. and various international organizations to bring these ideas to places where communications infrastructure is badly needed. He hopes that all of this effort is contributing toward the ultimate goal of infinite bandwidth everywhere for free. He is the author of Linux Server Hacks, Wireless Hacks, and Building Wireless Community Networks (which is in its second edition).

An ax worth having

I can't help myself not to begin this review with a big *thanks* to O'Reilly for choosing Linux to launch this new series.
First thing that crossed my mind after opening this tiny book, was a notion of close resemblance with another O'Reilly book that I read recently, "Unix Power Tools". Book is organized in almost identical way, short articles (anything from a page or two, to several pages) that are presented with a clear writing style, examples and efficient layout. Articles are cross-referenced in such a way that you can easily start reading the book from whatever end you wish.
The hacks that I like the most are those in chapters on Server Basics, Backups, SSH and Information Servers (BIND, Apache, MySQL, OpenSSL). If you're hardcore Linux sysadmin you'll probably appreciate hacks in other chapters too; Networking, Revision Control and Monitoring. For me, the most challenging hacks in this book are the ones that deal with tunneling (IPIP/GRE encapsulation, vtun over SSH), due to complete lack of experience on my side, otherwise I found the book well worth the price and time to read, even if you'll end up with only one or two implemented hacks in your production environment. (If I could only say this more often in my reviews :-).
Keep in mind, this is not the book that'll likely collect the dust on your bookshelf after you'll read it. Mine is always close to the Linux box that I manage (in a good company with already mentioned "Unix Power Tools").
I'm really looking forward to other books from O'Reilly Hacks series, what about 100 hacks on Oracle, MySQL, regular expressions "one liners" (with sed, awk, grep, perl...), Windows NT...

Good Bang for your buck

This series is a great place to start learning the some of the most useful aspects of linux in a networked environment. The examples used in the book are very well laid out and documented. My only gripe is that the subject is a little dated but overall it is still a very good book.

This is a great reference book, power users will find this book helpful as well as the second edition. One can expect to learn some of the fundamentals of linux with this book; backup, network shares, hostkeys, centralizing, and some other nifty one off mini-programs. This won't replace a lot of hard work, but it will make you think how you can work smarter.

Bell Ranch as I knew it by George F. Ellis

I bought the book because my grandfather, great-grandfather and great uncle worked at the Bell Ranch and I thought the book would be about the people who worked there. I was also hoping to find some family pictures in the book. I did find my great-uncle Maxmillian Esquibel mentioned briefly; however it was more about Mr. Ellis' experience. While the book was interesting and the pictures of ranch life were suburb it was not what I was looking for.

Belfort, who founded one of the first and largest chop shop brokerage firms in 1987, was banned from the securities business for life by 1994, and later went to jail for fraud and money-laundering, delivers a memoir that reads like fiction. It covers his decade of success with straightforward accounts of how he worked with managers of obscure companies to acquire large amounts of stock with minimal public disclosure, then pumped up the price and sold it, so he and the insiders made large profits while public investors usually lost. Profits were laundered through purchase of legitimate businesses and cash deposits in Swiss banks. There is only brief mention of Belfort's life before Wall Street or events since 1997. The book's main topic is the vast amount of sex, drugs and risky physical behavior Belfort managed to survive. As might be expected in the autobiography of a veteran con man with movie rights already sold, it's hard to know how much to believe. The story is told mostly in dialogue, with allegedly contemporaneous mental asides by the author, reported verbatim. But it reports only surface events, never revealing what motivates Belfort or any of the other characters. (Oct. 2)

A study in criminal psychology and drug addiction

I gave this 5 stars, not because it is a good read or a truthful memoir, but because it is a fine example of criminal psychology and drug addiction.
The supposed facts related by Belfort must be taken with a large dose of salt. He readily admits with some pride deceiving everyone he deals with including his wife and supposed friends and business partners. We would be quite gullible to then take his writing at face value.
He portrays himself as generous to a fault, but of course the money he passes out is mostly stolen. The judgement against him included a requirement to pay over 100 million in retribution to those he defrauded. Most of that has never been paid even though his income from books and movie rights is quite substantial. By the way his sentence was lighter than those of all his cohorts because he turned against them when the law caught up with him. This after spilling a lot of ink in his book about loyalty, trust and "omerta." Does he still have hidden assets that rightfully belong to the victims? You guess. I bet he does.
He tries to present himself as a reformed bad actor who has seen the light and conquered his addiction. I hope he has conquered his addictions, but that wasn't his only problem. He is quite intelligent and seen as such by all around him. The schemes he ran were carefully designed and couldn't have been conceived and executed while stoned, so there is more to this than addiction. The most important part of the story is left out. How did a broke guy starting at the very bottom of a major brokerage firm get to be a criminal millionaire? That's the guts of the real story, and it was left out. We only see him at the climax just before the downfall.
Sex and drugs sell books and movies and that's the new scheme, and it is lawful even if only partly true and even if the main facts are left out.
The schemer and deceiver is still at work.

Entertaining book written by a total scumbag

This book contains more background on Jordan's early days, his friends, etc.. He again reveals himself as a total scumbag and it is obvious that he has not changed. After ratting out his friends to the police, he rats them out to the general public in order to make some more money. And there are truly bizarre things here, like how the author gets morally outraged by a couple of girls dancing topless by his pool, in plain view of his young daughter. This from a man who has wandered around his home in a drugged stupor for most of that child's life, who has ripped off thousands of people, and who lies and betrays and cheats at every opportunity. As in the first book, we find some interesting insights every once in a while. At one point, he says that he was the happiest before he became rich, when his first wife and he were still struggling.

This book is much better written than the first one, The Wolf of Wall Street. It is obvious that Jordan is a fast learner, if nothing else. It is also a real page-turner, which is why I am giving it 4 stars.

Chickens have come home to roost -

Scorsese's film was much better than the book. Nevertheless the narrative was great in depicting how obnoxious and insatiably greedy stock brokers and their likes in the financial world were. Using, the typically Long Island/New york lingo, the story chronicled the rise and fall, rags to riches story of a Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio played him brilliantly in the film) because he had the uncanny persuasive charm to sell stocks even knowingly that they were worthless. He probably would feel no guilt or hesitation even if he was fleecing a granny of her pension. In a brief few years, he owned his stock broking firm. By manipulating IPO launches using rat-holes to artificially inflate prices, these wolves of the Wall Street can make 22 million in one day. This bulk of the book typifies the lavish excessive and narcissistic lifestyle of the stock and commodity traders where they earn millions easily and also blow millions recklessly on drugs and prostitutes. Their decadent lifestyle rivals that of the infamous roman incessant orgies to pleasure the senses. Their world is devoid of good conscience and morality but filled with self centeredness. No thanks to Bill Clinton for dismantling the Glass-Steegal Act, in the early 90s thus releasing more wolves onto Wall Street as we saw how it wreck havoc in the financial world culminating with the 2009 crisis. These scums who feed on the hard earned money of the common folks are generally devoid of morality and decency and honesty . Jordan Belfort is a clear example even though his misdeeds predates Bill Clinton's deregulation. The last few pages were the most important in the book because the chickens came home to roost proving once again that karma rules!. Although one gets the feeling that there was little remorse from narcissistic Jordan Belfort who believed that there is no dignity in being less than filthy obscenely rich.

BRENDA M. BOYLE is an associate professor of English at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She was a military intelligence officer in West Germany during the Cold War, and she is the author and editor of several books including Themes in Contemporary American Fiction: The Vietnam War.  JEEHYUN LIM is an assistant professor of English at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.  She is the author of the forthcoming book Bilingual Brokers: Race, Capital, and the Cultural Politics of Bilingualism.

Maciej Widawski is a professor of linguistics specializing in lexical variation and its description. He has conducted research on slang since the early 1990s and has written extensively on the subject. His recent books include The Dictionary of City Names in American Slang (2011) and Yinglish (2012).
