About the Author
Joseph Heller was born in Brooklyn in 1923. In 1961, he published Catch-22, which became a bestseller and, in 1970, a film. He went on to write such novels as Good as Gold, God Knows, Picture This, Closing Time, and Portrait of an Artist, as an Old Man. Heller died in 1999.

Existential masterpiece -- kindle version SUCKS>

I love this book, I've read it many times, you need to read it.

The 1 star review is for the kindle edition specifically. You can only download this book 5 times. I paid $12 for a 40 year old novel of which there are a zillion used copies for my Kindle-- and I can only download it 5 times.

In life ... sometimes you ask: "Why?"

Many of us, I'm sure, at one point or another in time have lived a life very similar to that of Heller's main character, Bob Slocum. I also have a daughter and a son close to the ages of the characters within, and have found it astounding the way he'd sometimes hit the nail on the head with resemblance in many of the conversations between father and offspring, spouse as well. The irony and comparability to my marriage, and life in general, was both hysterical and intense. I have a disabled son too, and know quite well the difficulties and complications that can and will arise, and the stress that it can place on a marriage as well. Heller did a good job at describing that (although I must credit myself with being a bit stronger about it than Bob Slocum ... to a point). There were differences as well, traits of Slocum that I didn't exactly care for, or couldn't seem to relate to; for he was in no way a perfect human being, but neither am I, nor are most of us. Though he did seem to be a bit of a bigot, a hypocrite, a womanizer and a male chauvinist, and somewhat vain and self-centered as well, these were mere flaws in the personality of a man who was basically fairly decent and normal. As different as we all may be, we all have our individual and personal flaws. Good people do have a tendency to struggle through life a lot, blindlessly at times ... constantly trying to figure it out by asking questions such as: "Why?"
This was a personable, brave, and heartfelt story from Heller, of one man's bout with fatherhood and modern life and its trials and tribulations. Though a tad depressing at times, there isn't much that can be done about that, so is life ... it's not always easy. I've read 'Something Happened' a couple of times and enjoyed it immensely both reads, though years between each. I may even read it again someday.

Excellent characterization, but often slow-going

I suppose the first thing that one should know before reading this book is that the title is a bit of a misnomer. I spent the entire 569 pages of this book waiting for something to, in fact, happen, but nothing does until the very end (and when it does the book pretty much comes to a screeching, unapologetic halt then and there).

If you can get past that, you'll do fine with this book. It is written entirely in stream-of-conciousness, from the point of view of Bob Slocum's confused and lonely mind. Truly the best thing about this book is the characterization of Bob himself; his sheer humanity is such that the more you get to know him, the harder it gets to be sure whether you should sympathize with him or depise him. It is often easy to do both simulataneously. This book takes you into the darkest corners of the mind of someone who on the surface would seem to be an average guy, and really makes you think about yourself and other people you know, the kinds of secret thoughts that everyone has and that everyone is ashamed to have.

Most of the book focuses on Bob's relationship with his family; his unnamed wife, son, and daughter and his brain-damaged son Derek. There are some very poignant moments here, although it does tend to stagnate in places where he simply reiterates the same point over and over again. He also has a tendency to jump back to certain specific details of his past for seemingly no reason at all and retell the same bits multiple times, and in sets of parantheses which often last for pages. We are, however, rewarded for our patience with these flaws whenever Bob tells us of his work life, for it is here that we get a taste of the wry humor and snappy dialogue that made Catch-22 such a joy to read.

I gave this book three stars because I did enjoy it, but it truly was difficult to get through at times. There is a lot to like here, but there is also a lot to get frustrated about, and there are moments when the bad outweighs the good. Still, any fan of Heller should add this to their collection - just be sure to read Catch-22 first.

Very Inspirational!

I happened across this book completely by chance in a bookstore. I was looking for new ideas for my elementary classroom. I remember thinking that the title seemed funny. Once I picked it up though, I was literally hooked (pardon the pun)! I couldn't put it down, and it has inspired a great many new ideas for me to use in the classroom. The advice and examples are so practical and inspiratioal. As a philosophy, it is a perfect fit for the classroom setting. It intends to make school what it should be... a place we all enjoy going and spending time.

Will inspire any teacher!

FISH! A REMARKABLE WAY TO BOOST MORALE AND IMPROVE

RESULTS by Stephen C. Lundin, Harry Paul and John Christensen

has become one of my favorite business books . . . so when I saw

that the principles have been applied to education in a book, SCHOOLS OF

FISH! by Philip Strand, Christensen

and Andy Halper, I knew that it was something that I had to read.

And am I ever glad that I did, in that it inspired me with its ideas and

techniques for better classroom management . . . though all the

many examples were from grades K-12 situations, I do believe that

they could be related to any level of education--up through and

including graduate school.

One quote from the book says it all: "We're very serious about

learning; play is just how we feel while we're doing it."

It got me thinking about the fact that education should be more

fun . . . for the teacher, as well as the student . . . you don't

have to be a rocket scientist to make this happen . . . just utilize

some of the methods that have worked for others, apply them to

your situation, and you'll be all set.

There were several memorable passages; among the ones that

I especially liked were these:

* That duality also transfers to adult relationships. As daily pressures

compete for our attention, it's amazing how people can seem rude

or, equally, how simple gestures stand out. For example, a certain

principal never answers his phone when talking with a visitor. "It

will ring and the other person will say, "It's OK if you get that," he

explains. "I tell them, `No, you're more important to me right now.'

They're always surprised," Why? Possibly because it's such a

powerful statement of respect and commitment.

* When it came to dealing with parents, Puntenney wanted to make sure

she not only called home to discuss problems, but also to congratulate

students. She sent good-news postcards home, and sometimes she

just called parents to tell them about their child's success.

"Some parents were in disbelief when I called," she says. "They

said things like, `Are you sure you have the right student?' One

said, `Nobody from school has ever called with good news before!

Thank you."

* At Avon Intermediate School, there's room at the table for everybody.

"Recently I bought furniture for the staff dining room--four tables with

four chairs for each table," says principal Scott Raftery. "The next day,

when I came in the dining room, the teachers had pushed all the tables

together to create one huge table so they could eat like a big family."

The above is just basic stuff, but it works . . . if you're looking for the ideal

gift for any teacher (past, present or future), then you won't go wrong

buying SCHOOLS OF FISH!

Not what I expected

I bought this book after a teacher at a conference shared how the Fish philosophy improved her work climate. I expected the book to be more like typical teaching books with concrete examples of how to implement strategies in the classroom. Instead it is more of a collection of inspirational stories from teachers who have followed the philosophy.
I then went to the website listed in the book for curriculum ideas, only to find that I have to pay for them.
Overall, it was an interesting and rejuvenating read, except for the constant plugs for their video, which of course can be bought separately on their website.

Great manual. It IS an actual book

This is just as described. Great manual. It IS an actual book. I thought it was going to be a loose leaf version like what I have seen in class but I actually prefer this a lot more. It's a pain when you rip pages flipping through them in a binder. WileyPlus is not include (sold seperately).

It's a good manual. But only binder version.

The manual seems pretty good for my class. It's new. The material the manual is made from is flimsy paper. But that's not too big of an issue. Just hard to get in a binder. It's a bit frustrating that they sent the binder version. When I bought the manual it gave me the option of binder or paperback version and I selected the paperback but I still received the paperback. So not sure if this only comes in binder version.

Saturday, 1973, the Day of Atonement – the most holy day of the year for the Jewish people - became the Harbinger of Doom for the Congregations of Israel. At 13:55 hours that day rolling Syrian cannon thunder was heard all along the front on the Golan Heights, and dense, black smoke shrouded it completely.

Many accounts of the Yom Kippur War have been written. But this is the first behind-the-scenes look at the Northern Command preparations for war during that fateful summer, when the Syrian army in the north, together with the Egyptian army in the south, coordinated a blitzkrieg offensive against Israel.
This book offers fresh insight into the pre-war debate that raged between the Northern Command and the Intelligence Branch that believed Syria was not looking for war. For the first time, the reader will be privy to the decision-making details that threatened to overpower the IDF Command. The Generals, who were in command, describe in their own words the pivotal battles that changed the course of the war, as well as the disastrous effects of the “hindsight evaluation” after the war was won reverberated throughout the corridors of power.
The four contributors of this book were assisted by a team of researchers and other army commanders, under the direction and coordination of Military Historian, Brig. Gen. (Res.) Dr Dani Asher.

Contributors:
Major General (res.) Yitzhak Hofi, “Haka”, the Northern Commander in Chief, Maj. Gen. (res.) Uri Simchoni, Head of Command Operations, Brig. Gen. (res.) Avraham Bar David, Head of Artillery, and Col. (res.) Hagai Mann, the command’s Intelligence officer, have combined their knowledge of the day-to-day events to recount the preparations and management of the war, its success and failures, and its repercussions that resonate even today.

A bit too technical

The book is very detailed and provides a lot of information; however, it does get confusing and a bit too technical at times. Looks like the authors, all from the military, intended the book for their colleagues rather than the general public. I missed the maps, particularly that of Mt. Hermon. Also, the Kindle edition has typos and cut-off sentences.

The most comprehensive account of the Golan Heights front during the Yom Kippur War. This book surpasses and corrects information from Duel for the Golan, which until now stood as the standard account for the fight on the Golan. The author was a former Israeli Military Intelligence officer and has written a number of books on the Yom Kippur War in Hebrew. This book was translated to English and the translation was very well done. The writing is dry and very "military" style, but the information in the book is basically new and revealing.

This is an excellent overview of social scientific theories of how and why social movements occur and what their characteristic dynamics are. Buechler does an excellent job of rooting competing currents in contemporary social movement theory in longer-running divisions within the social sciences and giving greater attention to relevant earlier work that many contemporary scholars ignore. After laying these foundations he gives a straightforward but thorough account of the development of social movement theory from early theories of Collective Behavior, through the rise of the Resource Mobilization/Political Process school to the present, paying attention to dissenting currents all along the way. All that is missing is a chapter on Buechler's own important (if underappreciated) contribution to this literature, "Social Movements in Advanced Capitalism: The Political Economy and Cultural Construction of Social Activism" and another on the recent emergence of an explicitly Marxist body of social movement theory represented by Cox and Nilsen's "We Make Our Own History." (The last is an unfair criticism of course since that work has appeared almost entirely since the publication of "Understanding Socal Movements."

Where have you been all my life?

This book is absolutely the best auto text written. It's great for the "want-to-be Mechanic" with minimal understanding of how cars work or even if you have no intention of ever picking up a wrench. Without jargon and pretense the authors make clear all that one should know about what goes on under the hood. The chapters are full of color pictures and exploded diagrams that make sense! This book is for everyone-man, woman, and teenager-who can read (at the high school level) and drives a car. It's as simple as that.
