Great Read

As usual Ms. Rochelle has outdone herself! I enjoyed the character development in this book. Watching Rayne blossom into the self confident person, while also watching Lance take charge of his life as refreshing. I would love to know what happened to Ariel. I also can't wait to read what I hope is a sequel about Coty and India.

An enjoyable read!

Rayne Doe (aka Nevetta Yardley) is a beautiful black woman who is found on the road by Dr Lance Carey. Nevetta cannot remember who she is, where she came from and why she was lying on the road. She is attracted to and cares very much for Lance the man who saved her and brought her to his clinic so she could receive the very best medical care.

Dr Lance Carey names her Rayne Doe as she suffers from amnesia and cannot remember anything about herself. Lance is very attracted to Nevetta but he cannot tell if his feelings are returned. Whilst feeling this strong attraction to Nevetta, he is currently dating Ariel Hawes. This is the major reason why he cannot pursue a relationship with Nevetta because he is not a free man and, therefore, he dares not engage in a new relationship, until he is no longer tethered to Ariel.

In order to express their hidden emotions for each other, they have to deal with the barriers to their relationship. Lance has to remove Ariel from his life. This will not prove easy to do because Ariel is a bitter vindictive woman who does not really love Lance but wants him for his money and prestige. Nevetta has to deal with the possibility that she may already be a married woman with a husband and children who care for and need her. She may have a boyfriend beside himself searching for her. How can she give into her feelings for Lance when there is so much uncertainty about who she is?

Lance and Nevetta reach out to grasp a love that could be taken away from them at any moment if Nevetta’s memory returns and confirms who she really is. The enemy is her memory! If it returns, Nevetta could be taken away from Lance and neither of them want that. Nevetta wants to remember who she is, in order that she can love Lance freely. Lance is afraid that the return of her memory could be the end of their relationship because their love may not be strong enough to survive full disclosure of who she might truly be!

They reflect on the severity of the fighting, and reveal the slowly ebbing hopes for survival. Together they provide an illuminating and tragic portrait of the appalling events at Stalingrad.

About the Author
REINHOLD BUSCH was born in 1942 in Metz, Lorraine. He graduated in medicine in 1967 and practised as a doctor for several years. Since 1995, Busch has conducted research on the health services of the Wehrmacht during World War II, and has authored several publications on the subject.

Escaping the Death Trap …

I’ve been waiting for a book that compiled individual accounts of the German experience in Stalingrad and finally, with SURVIVORS OF STALINGRAD, there is one. Editor, Reinhold Busch, has compiled 39 individual and diverse accounts of German soldiers and airmen who either escaped the Stalingrad “Kessel”/pocket or became prisoners and lived to tell about it.

Busch, who has previously published his research of German surgeons in the battle of Stalingrad, provides an interesting and unique visage of the depravity experienced by an entire army left to fend for themselves after being surrounded by a motivated and vindictive Red Army. With temperatures falling to sub-zero levels and still wearing uniforms suited for spring and summer, each soldier/airman’s account echoes a recurring theme of futility and misery. The stories provide a broad perspective of the epic battle’s final days, giving readers a better understanding of the chaos and downright fear that blanketed those trapped inside the pocket … from the frontline infantryman lacking ammunition and support to airmen dealing with the flood of terrified and wounded soldiers swarming their planes in a desperate attempt to flee captivity and certain death.

Each chapter represents an individual’s account and while they are all different, most all manage to touch on the same points: personal filth, extreme hunger, the unbearable cold, unburied dead, the soon-to-be-dead wounded and the Red Army bearing down. With the exception of a few, the stories range from two to six pages in length. Some of the accounts are more interesting than others, but they all combine to provide a better overall picture of the entire situation facing Germans before von Paulus’ surrender (one account even included that moment). Unlike most books involving personal recollections of war, I found it hard to view these men (in the circumstances they were in) as instruments of the once-vaunted, steamrolling Nazi war machine, but a string of forgotten left-overs whose fate depended mostly on good-fortune. There are a few “fighting to the end” scenarios presented, but most stories reflect a desperate effort to escape certain death from hunger, freezing to death or at the hands of vengeful Russian captors. The images presented are quite bleak and I found the book less war-like and more of a collection of human interest/survival stories. The accounts are retrieved either through interviews (present and past) and/or public record … they are told from a first-person perspective (we’re seeing what they saw). A collection of glossy photos in the middle of the book allows readers to put faces to some of the stories being told.

I appreciated the way Busch provided details of almost every individual named throughout the book, not just those providing the narratives. Footnotes detail the dates, places of birth and death (if applicable), as well as the dates of promotions and stages of any decorations awarded. I found this meticulous approach to detail quite impressive. The ranks and duties of all the individual stories are varied as well, adding a ground-up perspective to the whole picture. Additionally, we are provided the post-war status of the storytellers, including steps in their careers and where they are today (if living). Several of the men actually survived being a POW of the Soviet Union … a subject I wish Busch would consider for a future project.

SURVIVORS OF STALINGRAD is a unique book in that I haven’t been able to find anything comparable to it … most books about Stalingrad are overviews told by an individual (usually a historian). Considering the scant number of Germans who survived Stalingrad are still living, I feel this book serves as an important missing-link to the battle’s entire story.

grim, but also uplifting in a strange way...

Just got this book and so far it is very interesting since it deals soley with men who were at Stalingrad but somehow managed to escape either by air, or by retreating from the city in the nick of time or those that were taken prisoner and lived through years of imprisonment in the Soviet Union. There are 39 survivors detailed in this book and even though I'm only part of the way through, the stories are riveting. Good maps and black and white photos of some the men. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the eastern front of World War Two.

Eyewitness accounts from survivors of Stalingrad 1942-1943

This is a book for those who are familiar with the Stalingrad battle. Well known events such as the battles in the factory districts and the evacuations of wounded from the city are described by men who were there. First hand accounts always provide new perspectives to familiar events. There are about 40 stories from survivors in the book. Also, Busch provides a pretty good sampling from different service branches and ranks: NCO's, officers and enlisted men. I'd usually read 4 or 5 a night and then take a breather.

There are often similarities to the stories but that doesn't soften their impact. Stalingrad devoured soldiers from both sides with relentless ferocity. I don't think even Dante' could envision this frozen hell. The recollections were related years after the battle and were checked for accuracy by the author. One thing that struck me was the matter-of-fact way in which men who escaped the cauldron and those who survived Soviet captivity recalled their ordeals. But I guess it would take a talented writer to adequately describe the suffering of these men.

I highly recommend this book. Stalingrad occupies a unique place in the annals of military history. Anyone familiar with the battle is certainly going to be interested in these accounts.

Complementary to official OF documentation

At first, I was hoping that this book will act as a easier to read version of OpenFlow documentation. I hoped that it will present some examples by analogy to many of OF features. When I read first few chapters I had a moment of lack of faith. This book did not meet my expectations nor my needs at all. But (thankfully) since I have spent some money on it, I have decided to read on.

After further reading I can say that if you want to have an overall knowledge on OpenFlow - read the official documentation ... but if you are planning on implementing some OpenFlow logic to a switch or a southbound plugin to a controller - grab this book. It may help.

Each chapter of this book is written with use of the same template. This is extremely boring to read, but thanks to this, even if you will jump in into a chapter in the middle of the book, you will know where to look for information you need.

In overall, this is not a book that I expected to be, but I can say that I am happy that I have read it.

Beautifully Detailed and Superb Quality Visual Dictionary

This affordable, enjoyable, and essential reference tool is an amazing addition to my Spanish learning tools. There is a spot-on review by a member named Shawn, so I will suggest you read that review dated September 9, 2013. I will add that the product description indicates this book is a paperback, but it is not. It actually has a sturdy cover, although the cover is not nearly as thick as the typical hard bound book. For me this is is very preferable, keeping the dictionary on the lighter side, yet more durable than a paperback. It is also impressive that the pages of this book are sewn to the binding, not just glued... very good quality. The full-color illustrations are very clear and are presented with a practical and appealing layout. The wide variety of themes are nicely organized with color coded sections that can be seen even when the book is closed, helping you to turn to a desired section quickly. Finally, there are 2 complete and thorough indexes, one in English and one in Spanish, which include alphabetical listings and locations of every single word in the dictionary.

The only English-Spanish Visual Dictionary You Will Ever Need!!!

This is the best picture dictionary for Spanish I have ever seen. I would absolutely give this product 10 starts if I could! It very thorough, and covers a wide range of categories. It does not just give you a picture with the name of the item in the picture. It breaks every little piece of the picture down. For example: there are several pictures of different kinds of bicycles, but it is further broken down to show you the chain, pedals, derailleurs, crank, etc. It has sections for anatomy of the body, with a lot of detail, cooking ingredients; broken down into several categories.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying seriously increase for vocabulary of Spanish or English, or even for the casual user.

Holy frijoles, batman. This is about as in-depth as you can get.
It doesn't just give the word for fork, but point, tine, root, neck, back, and handle as well...I didn't know most of those words in English.
Need to know what a snail dish is? Page 303.
Trying to talk about partridges, quail, ravens, and shrikes? (Those are all different kinds of birds...) Page 163.
Need a tail comb vs a barber comb? Page 476.
If you ever find yourself on a nuclear submarine, just flip to page 899 and you'll be able to find your way around.
Now, common sense would dictate that 1152 pages (more than 22,500 words) would be either a big book, or a heavy one (or both), but it didn't dawn on me when I purchased it. Be forewarned...this book is 7 3/4 inches tall, 6 1/2 inches wide, and 2 inches thick. And it weighs 3 1/2 pounds. It is NOT a pocket book by any means.

Fantastic Reading

I loved these books the first time I read them. I love them more the second time because the bonus material adds so much to understanding the 2 major male characters. As always with Ms Lance's writing, I want more time with the characters, more time to be lost in the story. The writing is superb; the characters are so real & true I want to invite them to dinner & pick their brains. The animals are always welcome & I would adopt any or all of them. As to the storyline, it could be ripped from tomorrow's headlines if we are not careful. Kathryn Lance is an old & dear friend who happens to write exceptionally good books.

Pandora's Promise was a completely satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, so I didn't expect the box set's extra material to add more than interesting details. However, it deepened my understanding of the characters and their motivations so much that I'm going to re-read all three books.

I’m not very good at writing reviews

I’m not very good at writing reviews, but I felt I had to write something because, even though I generally don’t like post-apocalypse stories, I really loved this one. The third book adds a great and surprising conclusion to the original first two books and is by far the best thing the author has written. The addition of the extra material in the “boxed set” adds more background to the story. Because of this, the expense for the set was well worth it even though I already owed separate copies of all three books.

For too long the social discourse on "drugs" has been confined to equally sterile "treat-the-addict" and "incarcerate-the-criminal" rhetorics that arose between the end of the 19th century and early years of the 20th. The problem is we are now nearly a decade into the 21st century. With the prisons stuffed full, with the border with Mexico a free-fire zone, it is time to realize an entirely new perspective is needed. This book is one of a handful that points a way out of the dead end impasse of contemporary drug rhetorics.

To my knowledge, one-of-a-kind, risky, but much needed

As this book points out, just writing about this topic puts the writer on dangerous ground - e.g., if you do not condemn drugs, you must be using drugs. I applaud this book for taking this risk: applying critical thought to the subject of drugs in context of culture. Considering the breadth and depth of critical thought, drugs, and culture, why this book seems to be a genre unto itself is a thought provoking question in itself. This book provokes thought and gives the reader the room to think through the issues at stake and to formulate their own answers. I recommend this book because I have decided that the "with us or against us" answers are ignoring all that thought has to offer.
