Review
A Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2007

"This excellent, brief survey will pique the interest of readers enough to send them off to the plays themselves. It is a must for younger scholars and a good starting point for specialists ... Essential." Choice

“An astute and timely reminder of the sheer range and variety of American drama as it rose to international prominence, a drama that engaged national myths and realities, anxieties and hopes, as they were reflected in the lives of those who lived out what Henry Luce called ‘the American Century’.” Christopher Bigsby, University of East Anglia

“Strong and engaging … .A fine resource … that the reader can use as a guide to further historical and thematic thinking.” Text and Presentation

From the Back Cover
This succinct text gives readers an overview of how American drama developed from the end of the Second World War to the turn of the twenty-first century. It provides a balanced assessment of the major plays and playwrights of the period, and shows how they broke new ground in their contribution to political, economic, social and cultural debates, as well as in their innovative dramaturgical strategies.

In particular, the author shows how theatre and drama experienced the flourishing of Broadway, off-Broadway, and regional theatres, as well as trends such as realism, naturalism, melodrama, irony, satire, modernism, avant-garde, and experimentalism. Themes and movements highlighted include: the American dream of wealth and the desire for spiritual sustenance; conflicts in the American family; and the struggles for racial, gender, ethnic, and sexual equality.

About the Author
David Krasner teaches theatre, drama, and performance at Yale University. He is the author of Resistance, Parody and Double Consciousness in African American Theatre 1895-1910 (1997), and A Beautiful Pageant: African American Theatre, Drama and Performance in the Harlem Renaissance (2002). He is also the editor of A Companion to Twentieth-century American Drama (Blackwell, 2004), co-editor of Staging Philosophy: New Approaches to Theatre and Drama (2006), and co-editor (with Rebecca Schneider) of the University of Michigan Press’s series Theatre: Theory/Text/Performance.

Cool book, although I thought Krasner contradicted himself at times. The plays he mentions throughout the book I hadn't heard of before, and reading a little about them, sparked my interest. My professor used this book in the college course I took on Contemporary American Drama. It's good to use as a textbook, but just to read for yourself is something this book would not interest me in.

Decent contemporary overview
By Timothy W. Moraca
Krasner provides a decent overview of contemporary American drama, dividing the last half of the 20th century into periods of 10-15 years that he presumptuously categorizes based on historical events and their effects on the human psyche.

My complaint, then, is that I've had the book for only a week, and a chunk of the pages are already pulled off the binding. What the heck is that all about? Did they use a glue stick to put this book together? Lame.

A great historical novel
By John Gabree
Because he was famous as a participant in the Irish Civil War (in 1922, he raised a red flag over the Dublin Rotunda) and because his best-known book is "The Informer," Liam O'Flaherty is regarded primarily as a novelist of the Irish rebellion. In a letter to the Irish Statesman, he celebrated "the wild tumult of the untamed storm, the tumuilt of the army on the march, clashing its cymbals, rioting with excess of energy." Like our own Theodore Dreiser, he was capable of being crude, grandiose and melodramatic, and he was often swamped by his own rhetoric. But he was also capable, far more than Dreiser, alas, of reaching and expressing astonishingly delicate perceptions of the human soul.

At his best, O'Flaherty was one of the great natural forces of 20th Century literature. Like Jean Giono or Knut Hamsun, when writing about the land, the sea and the simpler creatures, including here peasants and seamen, his writing takes on the elemental forcefulness of classic folk tales. "Famine," his greatest work in this mode, is matched only in his best short stories. It reads as freshly today as it did when it was first published 45 years ago.

In 1845, the population of Ireland was estimated at 8.5 million. By 1851, it had been reduced by two million, half of whom had died and half of whom had fled, mostly to the U.S. and other former British colonies. The raw numbers do not do justice to the magnitude of the catastrophe that had befallen Ireland. In large parts of the south and west, traditional culture had been uprooted and destroyed.

Focusing on a family of County Galway tenant farmers, the Kilmartins, "Famine" inserts us into the horror of the "great hunger." A study of the uses of power -- by the old English ascendancy, by the rising middle class of usurious merchants, by the embattled (and mostly defeated peasants), it records the final days of an ancient, ritualistic society, unhinged by the destruction of the customs and traditions that had given shape and meaning to life. It is also about survival, especially that of Mary Gleeson Kilmartin, who fights for her family with fierce determination.

["Famine" was first published in 1937 but was never available in soft cover until a handsome edition was offered by David R. Godine's line of quality paperbacks, Nopareil, which also published works by Benedetto Croce, Edmund Wilson, Paula Fox, William Gass and Stanley Elkin. It was thought at the time that the publisher might be moved to reprint O'Flaherty's excellent short story collections, "Spring Sowing" and "The Tent." If you can find the Nonpareil edition, buy it; it is avaialble now in a version from Interlink.]

All you need to know to begin to understand The Irish.
By Amazon Customer
Liam O'Flaherty is the guardian of a lifestyle and a traditional way of thinking which died with the Great Famine. Read "Famine" and you'll know why the Irish are the way they are. It's recommended reading for anyone trying to get a peek at the Irish psyche.

epic novel
By A Customer
I loved this book and read it twice. It is at once sweeping and intimate. Without sounding trite it reminded me of Gone With the Wind, and one day I'm sure someone will make a movie of it, especially since Ireland has become popular in the media again. Based on the truth, a classic.

Truly incredible!
By Julie B. Thompson
I can't stress enough what a great anthology this is. Some amazing works are displayed, and though I am (was) not familiar with any of the authors here, there are a couple of stories that I believe are worthy of being called masterpieces.
For those looking for a jolt of raw horror, "The Road to Mictlantecutli", a classic tale of morality set against the desert of New Mexico, "Camera Obscura", about an introverted millionare's fastenating title device, "Party Games" about a not-so-innocent [...] child, and "The Knife" will fit the bill nicely.
Those looking for terror in the form of monsters need look no further than "It", a novellette about a highly-eveloved mold spore (written, fastenatingly, from the monster's perspective) "FishHead", a nasty little tale straight out of a Southern bayou, "Men With No Bones",and the bizarre "The Troll". Those who are looking for subtly-crafted tales will find pleasure with "One of the Dead" about a haunted house amongst the Hollywood mansions, "X Marks The Pedwalk", a disturbing tale about urban violence (apparently set in the future), "Not With a Bang",a post-apocalyptic tale with an ending that will leave you thinking, and the disturbing and strangely sad "A Death in the Family", about a man with a gruesome surprise in his basement.
If you like a dash of humor with your horror, the hilarious
"Tough Town", about a traveling salesman who gets a grim surprise after abscently striking a man's dog, and "The Canidate", about an organization working towards one common good--the death of a single, hated individual.

Now I would like to adress a few tales that I believe are true masterpieces: "Journey to Death". This story, about two men stranded in a tiny, air-sealed room in a sunken cruiseliner, is one of the most disturbing stories I have ever read, right up their with Stephen King's "Survivor Type". Then there is "Casablanca", a story that takes the reputably beautiful city and shows it in a disturbing, alien light. The final sentence of this particularly long short story is simply unforgettable.

The book concludes with the very good novel "Out of the Deeps", an interesting take on an alien invasion story. This novel is intelligent, but never allows for the suspense to drop. Recommened for late-night reading.

Of this entire volume, the only stories I can honestly say didn't really do anything for me were "Guide to Doom", "Two Spinsters", "The Kage", and the overlong "The Curious Adventures of Mr. Bond".
These four stories do absolutely nothing to hinder the otherwise excellent stories. The ratio of sucky-to-non-sucky (forgive my crudeness) stories is truly remarkable.
This is a very rare book, and one that sadly is widly unknown.
As another reader here has mentioned, it is a sin that a book this good is out of print.
Now--stop reading, and order this book. From Amazon, Ebay, wherever, I don't care. Just get it. You will never regret it.

Makes any "stranded on a desert island" list - a must have!!
By Jason C Morris
This anthology is one of the most chilling and creepy collections of gothic horror and the supernatural. Quite incredibly, it is very unknown and hard to find.
I can still smell the thick, slippery river mud of "Fishead". The stark and surreal horror of "The Troll" is like the Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner. And why the novelette "Out of the Deeps" hasn't been made yet into a summer sci-fi blockbuster on par with Star Wars escapes me.
This is a must-have book for those who like a good scare. Get some cookies, make some tea, lock the door, and be sure to leave a nightlight on...you can't look away from this book once you pick it up. The 1-star rating above is CLEARLY a typo on the reviewer's part.

The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein

'Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy.'

So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

Amazon.com Review
To say that this particular apple tree is a "giving tree" is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat. She suggests that he cut her down to a stump so he can craft a boat out of her trunk. He unthinkingly does it. At this point in the story, the double-page spread shows a pathetic solitary stump, poignantly cut down to the heart the boy once carved into the tree as a child that said "M.E. + T." "And then the tree was happy... but not really." When there's nothing left of her, the boy returns again as an old man, needing a quiet place to sit and rest. The stump offers up her services, and he sits on it. "And the tree was happy." While the message of this book is unclear (Take and take and take? Give and give and give? Complete self-sacrifice is good? Complete self-sacrifice is infinitely sad?), Silverstein has perhaps deliberately left the book open to interpretation. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

A children's book which never loses its power
By C. Quinn
The Giving Tree is a beautiful book about a tree who loves a little boy. In the beginning, the love the two share is enough to make them both happy. As the boy grows older, his needs change and the tree gives him everything in order to help him achieve happiness. When the boy is gone and the tree is left with nothing, she is happy, but not really. Eventually the boy returns and the tree has nothing left to give, but the boy has changed and no longer wants anything from the tree other than the companionship they once shared, and both are happy once again.
I fell in love with this book the first time it was read to me, and my feelings have never changed. As I child I knew it was a sad book, but I didn't know why. Now that I am an adult, I can understand the cost of unconditional love and I know why the tree was sad. The fact that this book inspires so much debate is a testament to the power of Shel Silverstein's writing. There is a lesson in this book and a powerful message. For me, the key point is that in the end, the love the tree had for the boy was vindicated by his return- older, wiser, and more appreciative. My mother bought me this book when I was young because she thought it had a poignant lesson to teach. My mother tells me that the tree is every mother, and that the sadness felt by the tree is the sadness every mother feels when her child grows up and grows apart. She says every mother's hope is that her child will return someday, wanting nothing more than to to sit together in silence and to be happy. Anyone who has ever loved someone enough to let them go will understand the painful choice highlighted in The Giving Tree.
I love this book and I give it to special people in my life to celebrate our friendship. I higly recommend this book to adult and child alike.

And the tree was happy, but not really: A 35 year old reflects...
By anjanette seewer-reynolds
I've been a Shel Silverstein admirer since I first received Where the Sidewalk Ends as a first grader back in 1976. The way Silverstein combines stark sketches with punchy language and ideas could woo almost any child.

As with most of his work, what makes it funny or appealing is his ability to write about humans at their most vulnerable or disillusioned states (poems like "The Land of Happy," "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout," "Jumping Rope" come to mind), and kids love that raw edge to him. The Giving Tree, however, is surprisingly subversive. It looks purely sweet at first, seeming to be about a love between a tree and a boy, and the beauty of doing anything for someone you love.

But it is TRAGIC. The tree ends up with nothing (she's a stump for him to eventually sit on), and the boy ends up an unhappy and lonely old man who has exploited (devestated) something he once loved.

Now, thirty years after my first reading of it, I'm not sure where I stand. This book was meaningful to me as a child--there was complexity in it, in giving and taking and paying consequences (and the pictures evoked great emotion). On the other hand, an obvious and simple message it could send is that it is good to give (and to take) at all cost.

In the end, I don't think the book should be avoided, by any means, because of its seemingly "selfless" message, but I do think it should be discussed (even in simple terms with the smallest child) as an eye-opening rendering of the danger of giving too much and losing yourself in the process.

A CONTROVERSIAL Classic to promote family discussion
By L'lee
There are two extreme ways to interpret this book, as shown by the multiple ratings of 1 and 5.

The first: This is a beautiful and sad story of unconditional love between a tree and a boy, in which the tree is generous and gives of itself to help the boy whenever he is in trouble. The metaphor in this case is that of a mother and a child, or God and a human.

The second: This is a story of a very selfish boy and a tree who loves him. Whenever he is in trouble, he returns to the tree who gives him another part of her self without ever setting limits, even though it makes her sad (and physically damages her) to do so. In this case, you can compare the story to a metaphor of an abusive, codependent relationship.

I can understand both views of this story, but the fact that the second interpretation is just as valid as the first makes me hesitate to recommend this book. Personally, I would NOT buy this book as a gift, or for my own children. If I had this book, I would wait to read it to my children until they reach the recommended 10 years old (or at least 8), and then I would discuss the book and its concepts (selfishness, limit setting/saying NO) with them. "What did you think of this book?" "Do you think that the tree/the boy did the right thing?" "What would you have done differently if you were the tree/the boy?" "If you were the tree, would you have said 'NO' to the boy at any point?"

A story that may be complementary to this one and more appropriate for younger audiences is "Ladies First", also by Shel Silverstein (found in "A Light in the Attic" or "Free to Be, You and Me"), which is about a girl who always gets to be first to do everything, but in the end that is not to her advantage. At least in that book the message is clear that selfishness is not OK.

If you prefer to avoid this type of discussion, you might be better off sticking to one of the MANY childrens' books that are much less controversial and intended only for entertainment.

    Gentle Introduction to Cassandra
    By Christopher Haupt
Having worked with many relational and NoSQL databases across multiple web and mobile projects, I was recently in need of a quick introduction to Cassandra. I picked up this and the more advanced Cassandra books from Packt when they were on sale recently.

While a book can quickly get out of date, I've so far found Learning Apache Cassandra is suitable (as of this writing) for getting in and fairly painlessly getting a handle on the basic capabilities and differences between Cassandra and other dbs. I'm particularly interested in learning about table structure, performant schema design, query patterns, and the like. The first few chapters (after the typical getting started/installed stuff), walk through an ongoing example of a twitter-like clone. The author does a decent job of building "features" of the project while tying it back to real world use-cases.

Later chapters discuss basic performance considerations, denormalization, and more complex data representation.

As an introduction and familiarization book, there was enough general detail that it should be useful for a while with respect to versions of Cassandra. It will definitely give you enough to branch out to more advanced books or resources on the web. In general this met my expectations.

For books of this kind to get 5 stars, I like to see how things develop with respect to the book being kept up to date and having "ever green" web resources, so it is too soon to tell on that front.

A good introduction to Apache Cassandra 4.5 Stars
    By Amazon Customer
If you have some database development background and wish to get a good solid introduction to Apache Cassandra then you might want to take a look at this book by Mat Brown. Mr. Brown has packed a lot of information on the basics of Cassandra into a 250 page book. The book is very readable, well laid out, has many clear examples and very nice illustrations. I think as a introduction it was a great choice for Mr Brown to use Cassandra's CQL as the programming tool of choice.

What I like to see in the second edition is Authentication and Authorization moved into the beginning of the main book as it is a fact of life. I also would like more read and write consistency example as another reviewer asked. It would be nice if the Table level create options could be covered in an Appendix I think it would be useful for both developers and Admins.

Ok my only warning for potential readers is if you don't have a relational database background it will take you more time to work through the book as Mr Brown uses many comparisons of Casandra features to relational systems.

this book is awesome. I read almost all the books on Cassandra ...
    By AJ
Thanks to Mat, this book is awesome. I read almost all the books on Cassandra available, and somehow I missed this one. This happens to be my latest reading.
One question I have for Mat on Pp 170 of the book. While the diagram seems to be correct, the explanation between the two diagrams on this page, for me, looks incorrect. I could be mistaken.

In my opinion the explanation should say Alice is on Node3, Bob is on Node1 and Ivan is on Node2

Am I missing something. If any one could clarify I would appreciate it.

Five stars for this book and the author.

Best radiology book on the market, great for nat'l boards
    By A Customer
I graduated chiropractic school this year. I used this book in school and found this it to be filled with lots of info on soft and hard tissue pathology. The radiographs are excellent in this book. Every condition from spinal bifida occulta to fibrous dysplasia is described with the utmost detail. Every chapter has a helpful summary that summarizes all the important points of each condition. I also used this book to help me study for Part II, III and IV of the National Boards. However, if you really want a great book to study for the national boards do what my study group and I did, get the following:
National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1) and (Volume 2)
The questions in these last 4 study guides are right on with the kind of questions encountered on the National Boards. These 5 books contributed greatly to helping my study group and I pass the boards. For example the Part IV Study Guide had great sections on chiropractic technique, clinical impression and x-ray diagnosis. It presented the questions just like on the exam. These 5 books are must buys.

An exhaustive text on skeletal radiology. Though my experience is limited, it would certainly seem that if its not in here we don't know about it yet...perhaps thats too great a generalization but this text will definitely prove beneficial beyond the classroom as many doctors can attest.

Blood of the Provinces: The Roman Auxila and the Making of Provincial Society from Augustus to the Severans, by Ian Haynes

Blood of the Provinces is the first fully comprehensive study of the largest part of the Roman army, the auxilia. This non-citizen force constituted more than half of Rome's celebrated armies and was often the military presence in some of its territories. Diverse in origins, character, and culture, they played an essential role in building the empire, sustaining the unequal peace celebrated as the pax Romana, and enacting the emperor's writ.

Drawing upon the latest historical and archaeological research to examine recruitment, belief, daily routine, language, tactics, and dress, this volume offers an examination of the Empire and its soldiers in a radical new way. Blood of the Provinces demonstrates how the Roman state addressed a crucial and enduring challenge both on and off the battlefield--retaining control of the miscellaneous auxiliaries upon whom its very existence depended. Crucially, this was not simply achieved by pay and punishment, but also by a very particular set of cultural attributes that characterized provincial society under the Roman Empire. Focusing on the soldiers themselves, and encompassing the disparate military communities of which they were a part, it offers a vital source of information on how individuals and communities were incorporated into provincial society under the Empire, and how the character of that society evolved as a result.

At long last ...... a true story of who really fought the Roman wars and conquest that lead to its long future strength and dest
    By james
I think it is important realize that the majority of the Roman conquest from the late Republic and throughout the whole Priceipate and future Empire . Was almost wholly achieved by an army and legions of recruits . Who were not from from land area we now call Italy.

The late Repuplic began its usage of recruiting a specialized force to supplement its area of weakness such as heavy Calvary and the expertise area of archery and slingshot. With the coming of Pompey and Caesar and their personal agenda of conquest and their need for an army outside the jurisdiction of the Senate . Started the first large recruitment of non Roman citizen armies.

The massacures of the Civil Wars and a population tired of wars was only too willing to allow Augusta to do the Roman people a favor by never recruiting again from the civil population of Italy again . The future legions of Rome would be supplied by the Provencies . Those non citizens ( with future promise of Roman citizenship) would forever do the dying for Roman conquest!!!!!!

This book finally tells this story . At long last an almost full story and gives credit to the past limited reseachers!!
